This stand, "The Artist and the City", is a visual mirroring of the relationship I have with Johannesburg's inner city. These linocut prints are a series of urban mapping representations, each showcasing a variety of taxi hand signs used by commuters to indicate their desired destination. Each depiction of these hand signs houses a street grid representation of the location and area where each feature is used. These works simultaneously present an urban environment bursting with cacophonous activity, whilst showcasing how silent hand gestures are used to Communicate within the seemingly pandemonium-filled environment of this African urban cityscape
