Universal Design and Accessibility Seminar

This seminar will provide an overview of the current context and opportunities surrounding persons with disabilities and inclusion in the built environment. We will cover historical and theoretical content including general disability awareness and further ,explore these concepts with shared experiences from persons with disabilities. We cover inclusive communication skills which gives a snapshot perspective on how to ensure the use of effective, progressive, and inclusive techniques when communicating. The seven principles of universal design will be unpacked through the showcasing of drawings, photos, and videos that demonstrate the practical application of these principles. Having understood what universal design entails, we then unpack the South African legislated framework that guides the implementation of inclusive goals. This seminar is focused on the built environment stakeholder because the professional team holds the key to the implementation of any inclusive strategy. This value chain is discussed before concluding with a pictorial analysis of best practice examples showing successful inclusive built environments. Throughout the seminar, there will be a series of interesting facts, myth-busters, and enlightening information that seeks to demystify disabilities. The practical segment on day 2 has been designed to create an immersive experience as participants manoeuver through a facility – with a simulated impairment. Participants will use the knowledge gained to assess different parts of the seminar venue in terms of barriers, restrictions, and design choices. The event will culminate in a brainstorming session which will unpack the experiences gained and the possible ways forward. We will conclude the event with motivational words by a guest speaker, a summary of the outcomes, and an invitation to keep connected.
