Theme: Placemaking

Dr. Dayle Shand (PhD, UP), landscape architect & lecturer

Passionate about environmental justice, and urban place-making, Dayle Shand received her Ph.D. from the University of Pretoria in 2023. Her topic included human-nature relationships in cities, and environmental justice legacies in the City of Tshwane. She is a lecturer and professionally registered landscape architect with experience primarily in public sector projects. She has been lecturing since 2017. Her current research interests include animal-aided design, human-nature relationships in the built environment, and environmental and spatial justice.

Kevin Gonclaves, lecturer

I am a practising professional architect and urban designer. I am fortunate to lecture at the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of the Witwatersrand. Beyond aesthetics, I try to incorporate the effect of phenomena like sound into my design works. Where possible, I try to test my hunches in the sobering reality of construction – making buildings and objects – and reflect on their effectiveness so the following intervention is an improvement
