About the event
Behind the scenes at an architectural archive
The Architecture Archives at the University of Pretoria (AAUP) is a curated aggregation of significant architectural collections, a project for the preservation and interpretation of architectural legacies, and an institutional unit for the formalized and specialized management of architectural records. From the flagship collections of Norman Eaton, Gordon McIntosh, and John Fessler to the undiscovered items of architectural history hidden in our storage areas, the aim is to safeguard architectural archival heritage, foster academic research, and facilitate informed architectural practice.
This presentation by Johan Swart will take guests behind the scenes at the AAUP, offering a glimpse into the fascinating world of architectural drawings. Guests will be introduced to the conservation strategies, curatorial projects, and flagship collections at the archives, after which a selection of Johan's favorite twentieth-century drawings will be showcased and interpreted. Lastly, the presenter and specialist guest panel will reflect on the value(s) of historical architectural documents and the relevance of archives for the architectural profession.
