About the event

Join us at the UJ Art Gallery for a walkabout of the Cities in Transformation - The Centre Cannot Hold exhibition by Leon Krige

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Art Gallery presents its upcoming exhibition, Cities in Transformation – The Centre Cannot Hold by photographer Leon Krige. This innovative photography exhibition explores the dynamic and often unseen boundaries created by power and politics in urban landscapes.

Opening 4 September 2024 at the UJ Art Gallery, this exhibition features a compelling collection of panoramic stitched images and experimental analogue photographs, offering a profound visual narrative.

Through his photography, Krige draws on a personal connection to the city of Johannesburg, reflecting on its history of inequality, fear, and segregation. “In Johannesburg, the sodium lights that once marked the townships now tell a story of both segregation and resilience. My work is about documenting these transformations and challenging the viewer to consider the forces that continue to shape our urban landscapes. These changes are most apparent after dark.”

Cities in Transformation is not just a visual journey across continents; it is an invitation to reflect on the forces that shape our urban landscapes and the lives of those who inhabit them.
