LINEWORK is a series of interactive freehand drawing workshops facilitated by architect and conceptual artist, Lorenzo Nassimbeni. The workshops are held online in a live session. LINEWORK offers an opportunity for architects, designers in other fields and artists (professionals and students) to explore architectural and artistic concepts through the medium of freehand drawing. The workshops are about celebrating one’s creativity through freedom of expression and the joy of drawing. Participants follow inspiring design themes by drawing live during the workshop, making wonderful discoveries under the guidance of the facilitator.

Readings:

1) Essays and blogs

Hornby Vellard Reclamation Project

Mumbai as a global city: A theoretical essay

Sketching Mumbai: Stepping Back in Time

2) Instagram accounts:

 @streetartmumbai

@uskmumbai

Materials list:

Drawing materials

  1. pencils (graphite-various thicknesses)

  2. pens (various thicknesses)

Optional:

  1. colour pencils / crayons / coki pens (Sharpies, Copic,  or similar) / Conté crayons

  2. inks (black and / or colour)

  3. paintbrushes (1 x small, 1 x medium, 1 x large)

  4. charcoal (various thicknesses)

* Note:

We will be doing freehand drawings, and you will have certain drawing materials which you prefer and are accustomed to using. Pens and pencils are essential. It is your choice whether or not to invest in line items marked as ‘optional’, if you do not have such material. I would encourage you to do so, as you have the opportunity to discover new drawing media and techniques that you might not be familiar with. This will enrich your drawing process and you will be able to use these materials in the future, having learned new techniques through the workshop. You may also add any other drawing materials you would like to use to the list.

Should you wish to invest in some drawing materials other than the essential items, here are some good products to consider:

Charcoal: Link to product

Drawing accessories

Essential items:

  1. glue for sticking down paper

  2. scissors or craft knife

  3. ruler (steel ruler ideal for cutting of paper purposes)

  4. cutting mat or surface on which you can cut paper (a sheet of cardboard will do)

Optional but useful items:

  1. Masking tape

Paper

  1. 10 sheets of A2 white cartridge paper (any gsm)

  2. 15 to 20 sheets of A4 white bond paper (any gsm)

  3. 5 to 10 sheets of A3 tracing paper (any gsm)

* Note :

The reason for the suggestion to use A2 paper is that it allows one to venture beyond the often-used A4 and A3 size. The A2 size allows one to draw more freely and at a larger scale. It opens up many possibilities for conceptual design exploration. If you really prefer to use A3 or A4 paper only, by all means do so, but do take into account the above.

Depending on your process, it might be that you do not use all the paper. If this is the case, the paper can be used in the future for other workshops or opportunities you take to explore the techniques you have learned in the workshop. It is always best to have more paper than you require as a contingency. If you feel that you tend to draw quickly and like to produce many drawings, by all means exceed the prescribed quantities of paper listed.

NB : if you envisage that you will be using a lot of ink on any one drawing, I would suggest a thicker grammage paper (200 gsm or greater). This is to ensure that the ink does not cause the paper to tear.

Printed material

At A4 in black and white and / or colour, print out a variety of photographs and / or  drawings of  urban scenes / buildings / interiors / objects / landscapes / people etc which represent the city of Mumbai. The images can be of streetscapes, aerial views of the city, close-ups of urban furniture, paintings of the city - anything you wish. When selecting images, do not think too much. Follow your instinct and select images which attract your eye intuitively. Note that you may also use images from books or magazines, if you do not wish to print. Note that it is useful to have some images printed in black and white for the sake of contrast. You may choose to select photographs or drawings which are figurative or abstract, it is up to you. My suggestion would be to print 5-10 images, but select as many as you wish.

A notebook / sketchbook

A notebook / sketchbook is good to have so that you can make preliminary sketches and write notes during and after the drawing exercises if you wish.

Smart phone

A smart phone that has a digital camera is necessary to take photographs of your drawings made in the workshop.
