Dear reader The Corobrik SAIA Architectural Awards, which took place recently in Pretoria, after the Architecture ZA 18 conference, is always a fantastic showcase of the most impressive local projects that have been completed over the past two years. After all the thought-provoking presentations and exhibitions of the AZA18 conference – with much discussion about what architects could and should do – it was heartening to round it off by recognising the excellent recent work that has been done. Important trends that were recognised in the shortlisted projects included environmental sustainability and the development of local skills, which shows a forward-looking approach to both the environmental and social contexts. Architects and their clients are clearly thinking beyond the building itself. It was also noteworthy that the technical advancement of the winning entries puts them on a par with global standards. Congratulations to the winners – particularly the recipients of the Awards for Excellence – for pushing the boundaries of what is possible, and enriching the building environment in the most inspiring ways.
