Why aren’t Architects involved in the Conceptualization of (most) Social / Affordable Housing Developments?

The architectural training is rich with tools to contribute to developing responses to the global housing crisis. Many post-graduate architecture students across South Africa's Architectural Learning Sites (ALSs), develop their final projects around social architecture broadly and social housing specifically. The structure of the profession presents significant hurdles to realizing these visions. How can we as young professionals connect the dots between the dreams of our training and the reality of our profession?
